How to build a home exercise program in five minutes

Five minutes is roughly what a home program is worth of your documentation time. Not because it isn't important — it's arguably the most important artifact the patient takes home — but because time spent formatting is time not spent treating. Here's a workflow that reliably fits in the gap between patients.
Minute 1: start from a template, not a blank page
The fastest program is one you've mostly built before. If you treat rotator cuff repairs weekly, you should have a "RC repair — early phase" template with the standard movements, dosage, and your usual cues already in place. Building a program then becomes an editing task: remove what doesn't apply, adjust dosage, add the one patient-specific item.

Minutes 2–3: pick exercises and dose them
Search the library by region or discipline, add the movements, and set dosage on each one explicitly:
- Sets and reps — a number, not a range. "2–3 sets" reads as "2 sets" by week two.
- Frequency — daily? twice daily? three times a week? Say it per exercise.
- Holds — if an exercise is time-based, put the seconds on it. A digital session can then run the countdown for the patient, which beats them counting "one-Mississippi" mid-stretch.
Minute 4: add the cues that make it yours
The difference between a generic sheet and your prescription is one sentence per exercise: "keep the elbow pinned to your side," "stop if this reproduces the tingling," "this one should feel like effort, not pain." Write the cue on the exercise where the patient will see it every time — not in the air of the treatment room, where it evaporates by Thursday.
Minute 5: deliver it twice
Print the handout and hand over the link:
- The printout goes home, gets stuck on the fridge, and carries a daily checklist plus a QR code.
- The link (or that QR code) opens a guided session on their phone — each exercise with its media, its cue, a timer for holds, and set tracking.
Same program, two delivery formats, zero extra authoring. Patients pick whichever fits their life; many use both.
